Check out this intelligent, informative and enlightening feature article by Cllr Clarence Barrett (Cranham, RA) who is the leader of the main opposition Residents' Group on Havering Council.
In his article for the national political party conference edition of Politics First magazine, he talks about the financial challenges facing local authorities as they deal with government spending cuts, and also how playing party politics at a local level can be counter-productive:

Lighting up the Lane concert
Tomorrow I start rehearsals for the Lighting up the Lane concert, a musical concert version of last year's play celebrating 60 years of the Queen's Theatre. It will be performed next Friday so please BOOK YOUR TICKETS HERE asap or call the box office on 01708 443333.
Set around a group of young friends growing up in 1930s Hornchurch, Lighting up the Lane was the brilliant community play of 2012 which sold out then, and is set to sell out next Friday also!
I'm playing a character called Brian who's the villain, although the show centres around young lovers Georgie and Maggie who, along with Georgie's best friend Jimmy and the rest of the gang, try to save the old cinema from greedy developers and get it turned into a theatre for the whole community to enjoy.
Overall it's a beautiful, upbeat and heart-warming story which also gets very dark at points with the onset of war.
It's also a story about our local history and some of the scenes portray councillors in a non-too-endearing light!
I'm really looking forward to reuniting with a truly professional set of actors and friends.
Our madly enthusiastic director Patrick O'Sullivan will also be giving a talk about the Queen's Theatre for the Havering Fabian Society on Tuesday 10th September at Billet Studio, Fairkytes which will be worth attending.
Lighting up the Lane is directed by Patrick O'Sullivan, and was written by Dave Ross with Gerry Sweeney and Patrick O'Sullivan. The music was composed by Steven Markwick and the lyrics by Dave Ross.

Don't neglect our Queen's Theatre!
This year the Queen's Theatre - the jewel in the crown of our borough - is celebrating it's 60th anniversary with a series of performances and events for all residents to enjoy.
However, there were no birthday cards, cake or well-wishes from the London Assembly at City Hall!
Check out page 14 of this week's Romford Recorder to read how Tom Copley, a London Assembly politician failed to include the Queen's on an important tourist map of the capital's small theatres, and how I took him to task for it:

Just today, I received this tweet from Tom Copley AM, which is a very positive result:
Let's make sure Tom keeps to his word for next time!
